Red Mites in Castro County

John Thobe, EA-IPM Parmer, Bailey, and Castro has confirmed ‘red mites’ in Castro County late field corn this week.  We will need to add this pest to our scouting preparation for next season.  They do tend to behave more like a Banks grass mite but are most likely closer kin to two-spotted mites, except they have proven harder to control north of Amarillo and into Kansas where this pest has been active for several growing seasons.  Now that they are in our area, we will be working on finding the best treatment options locally, building on and hopefully just adapting control measures proven by our friends to the north to our area next year.  Stay tuned folks…
