John Thobe, EA-IPM Parmer,
Bailey, and Castro has confirmed ‘red mites’ in Castro County late field corn
this week. We will need to add this pest to our scouting preparation for
next season. They do tend to behave more like a Banks grass mite but are
most likely closer kin to two-spotted mites, except they have proven harder to
control north of Amarillo and into Kansas where this pest has been active for
several growing seasons. Now that they are in our area, we will be
working on finding the best treatment options locally, building on and
hopefully just adapting control measures proven by our friends to the north to
our area next year. Stay tuned folks…
